NEW Suzuki GSX-S1000 2021: closer look.
The Suzuki GSX-S1000 returns in a heavily changed version. It is not only about the engine adapted to the latest approval requirements, but above all about its completely new look. Now the GSX-S 1000 looks really cool!
Suzuki GSX-S1000 saw the light of day in 2015. It was the first purebred power naked Japanese and in fact the great and non-obvious equipment is considered to be a kind of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It looked quite promising at that time, but only a ride with this equipment made it possible to properly appreciate its true capabilities. If the situation is similar to the latest version of the GSX-S, then we will have a great bike for everyday riding and weekend track days.
Japanese warrior: the genesis of the sports naked bike.
The GSX-S1000 was introduced 6 years ago as a completely new model, created to give motorcyclists the pleasure of sporty driving in street conditions. The heart of the bike was the street-tuned, powerful 999cc long-stroke engine that had previously led the GSX-R1000 to countless superbike and endurance championship victories. This engine has been skillfully combined with a compact and light frame, refined components and a comfortable, upright position behind the wheel. All this to embody the Suzuki engineers’ approach to the maxim “Run. Turn. Stop”. The assumption was to achieve the best balance between the above-average performance and utility advantages of a motorcycle. Just as the GSX-R1000 was built to dominate the racetrack, according to the Suzuki, the GSX-S1000 was made to “control the streets.”
The latest incarnation of the GSX-S1000 is also its first major update. Of course, its aim was to adapt the equipment to the new, much stricter approval requirements. However, such a serious tinkering at the construction is also a great opportunity to also improve what is good and refresh the look, for which “update” was already high time. Improved handling and agility are expected to reflect the character and purpose of this motorcycle even better. Suzuki claims it has improved the “styling package”, but in our opinion it is modest, because the equipment now looks really original, dynamic and downright sharp. While in the case of the first version it could be said that the idea of what the flagship streetfighter from Hamamatsu should look like was a bit lacking, this time it is hard to accuse the GSX-S of a lack of character. All this so that he was ready to focus on himself and take control of the streets.
Suzuki GSX-S 1000 2021: What’s New?
It cannot be denied that the Japanese have worked hard to change their image. Few of the fans of the brand could have expected such a sharp streetfighter. In our opinion, this is definitely a good move – especially since the competition in the class is strong and also does not mince stylistic (and not only stylistic) measures. Aggressive silhouette announces that this equipment does not take prisoners. It is true that 152 HP of maximum power may not be an overwhelming result at present, but Suzuki has repeatedly proved that dry numbers often have nothing to do with the ability to generate emotions and the overall refinement of the entire structure. In this matter, you can almost bet that the next Suzuki will surprise you once again. Of course in positive way. Hamamatsu engineers claim that they have managed to get better performance as well as reduce fuel consumption. The power increased by 2KM and the torque decreased by 1Nm. The graphs presented by Suzuki show that the torque curve is now flatter and overall more of it throughout the RPM range by about 1.8%. How did these changes affect the overall character of the bike? According to the assurances of the Japanese, the new GSX_S has a greater kick and produces better values in terms of acceleration.
The futuristic look of the skimpy body is crowned with a vertical LED headlight and sharp lines on the front of the bike, which were reportedly inspired by the look of fighter jets. In turn, the narrow and slender rear section makes the equipment look additionally muscular.
The heart of the GSX-S is still the legendary engine from the super sports Gixer, which has already shown itself in superlatives. The engine has been tuned to unleash a bit more of its potential, while at the same time venting to eco-friendliness. We have here, among others new camshafts, timing chain tensioner, gearbox shaft and clutch slave cylinder, valve springs, check valves, output shaft, clutch, and finally clutch and alternator covers. The fuel injection system, which uses elongated ten-hole injection nozzles, as well as the exhaust system, changed too. The catalytic converters and end can have been changed, and the Suzuki Exhaust Tuning system has been moved. The new GSX-S has the Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS) clutch assist designed to provide smoother engine braking, better control when downshifting, and requiring less force to operate the clutch lever.
The GSX-S 1000 2021 is equipped with a large package of new electronic control systems designed to make riding the GSX-S 1000 more predictable, easier to control and more efficient. Among the systems, there are 5 modes of engine power characteristics, giving the ability to adjust the method of torque delivery depending on the driving style or type of ride, at any time. This, in turn, multiplies the driving pleasure in different ways, even on the same stretch of road. A new, much more extensive electronics package based on the SIRS system, i.e. Suzuki Intelligent Ride System. We now have at our disposal:
- The Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS) switch allows you to choose between three power characteristics according to your preferences and road conditions, depending on whether you want to ride in a sporty style, train on the track, ride on slippery or uneven roads or just you enjoy a pleasant ride on the city’s thoroughfares.
- Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS) with 5 settings and a switch off puts you in full control of your bike in all conditions, while reducing stress and fatigue.
- The new ride-by-wire electronic throttle control system is simpler, lighter and more compact than the previous mechanical cable steering system.
- The two-way quickshifter Quick Shift System (which can be deactivated) ensures quick and smooth gear changes without the need for a clutch lever.
- Suzuki’s Easy Start System provides greater comfort and driving pleasure by allowing the rider to start the engine with one quick press of the starter button and without having to press the clutch lever.
- Low RPM Assist has been updated to work with the SCAS system and make starting from a standing start even easier and smoother.
In terms of the frame, Suzuki abandoned the change of characteristics, focusing on details. So we have the same package known from the previous model, consisting of an aluminum frame, swingarm, and fully adjustable Kayaba suspension. Brembo’s radial four-piston calipers are responsible for the high performance of the brakes. What can change a lot in the reception of this machine is a different steering wheel, which is now 23 mm wider and set more to the vertical. The position behind it is slightly more upright, which will translate into a better fit for the characteristics of the motorcycle and the improved engine, and the wider grip and closer to the handlebar position are to improve ride comfort, requiring less effort to steer the motorcycle. The shape of the driver’s seat has also been changed, which, combined with the slim and narrower new body, is to make even shorter people feel confident on this equipment. The seat height is 810 mm. In addition, it is now split, which gives better support and emphasizes the sporty look.
The tires on which the GSX-S 1000 will leave the showroom has also been updated. Its six-spoke alloy cast wheels will feature Dunlop Roadsport 2, a new compound and an Ultra Flex Steel Jointless belt. Thanks to this, it is supposed to be reliable and predictable, which is said to be confirmed by long hours of tests.
