MotoGP: Jorge Martin wins the Indonesian GP
Jorge Martin avenged himself in the best possible style at the Mandalika circuit, where he had crashed while leading both last year’s race and Saturday’s sprint. This time, however, the Spaniard made no mistakes and claimed his first Sunday race victory since the French GP in May!
At the start of the race, just like in the sprint, Jorge Martin was the fastest, while Enea Bastianini moved into second place ahead of Pedro Acosta. Pecco Bagnaia was in fourth place, and Marco Bezzecchi, riding in special livery with the VR46 team, rounded out the top five. Further back, a serious crash occurred at the exit of the second turn, involving Alex Marquez, Aleix Espargaro, Jack Miller, and Luca Marini. Luckily, all four walked away from the track on their own.

From the start, the “Martinator” tried to pull away, building a lead of over a second after just three laps. In contrast, Saturday’s sprint winner Bagnaia had issues, dropping to sixth place after being overtaken by Franco Morbidelli. Meanwhile, Marc Marquez was hot on his heels.
The opening laps saw little change, aside from a prolonged battle between Bagnaia, Marquez, and Fabio di Giannantonio. Martin’s lead over Acosta fluctuated around 1.2 seconds, while Acosta enjoyed a similar margin over Morbidelli. After one-third of the race, Bagnaia, now in sixth place, started to push harder, twice setting the fastest lap time and beginning to close the gap, just like he did last week in Misano.
This three-way battle though 😮

After 10 laps, Martin’s advantage began to shrink unexpectedly. Within two laps, he lost half a second to Acosta and was now less than a second ahead. Morbidelli also picked up speed, and Bagnaia continued his strong pace from behind. By mid-race, Acosta was closing in on Martin, shaving off tenths of a second, while Pecco was setting lap times in the 1’30.5 range, steadily catching up to his rivals. During this time, Marc Marquez suffered a mechanical failure with his Desmosedici GP23 when on seventh place.

With ten laps remaining, the race calmed down somewhat. Martin maintained a safe lead of around seven to eight-tenths over Acosta, while the rest of the group began to fall behind. Bastianini moved into third but was already over two seconds behind the leading Spaniards, with Morbidelli, Bezzecchi, and Bagnaia following closely behind.

However, the action was far from over as “The Beast” Bastianini set a blistering pace. Known for his incredible rhythm at the end of races, the Italian was rapidly closing the gap on his rivals and looked set to challenge for the win… until he crashed at the first turn with seven laps remaining, just after setting a new lap record!

Amidst all the chaos, Acosta also made a mistake, losing contact with the leader. Martin now had nearly a two-second advantage over Pedro, while Acosta had more than three seconds over Bagnaia, who had moved into third place. Behind him, Bagnaia was being chased by his VR46 Academy teammates, Morbidelli and Bezzecchi, leaving the podium spots still uncertain.

In the end, Jorge Martin achieved his goal and claimed his first victory in Indonesia after crashing here in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, as well as in yesterday’s sprint. Rookie Pedro Acosta finished in second, while Pecco Bagnaia took third, minimizing his losses after a tough start. Franco Morbidelli came very close to his first podium on a Ducati (and his first since the 2021 Spanish GP), ultimately finishing fourth, with Marco Bezzecchi rounding out the top five.

Maverick Viñales finished sixth, while Fabio Quartararo, despite a poor start after starting from the second row, ended up seventh. Brad Binder secured a solid eighth place, and the top Honda rider was Johann Zarco in ninth, marking the first time in a long while that the RC213V made it into the top 10. Raul Fernandez completed the top ten, with Takaaki Nakagami and Alex Rins rounding out the field in the last two positions.
It’s worth noting that after the race, the organizers examined the tire pressures of Acosta, Binder, and Nakagami, meaning the results could still change.

In the overall standings, Jorge Martin extended his lead over Pecco Bagnaia to 21 points. After Bastianini’s crash and Marc Marquez’s mechanical failure, both riders are now 75 and 78 points behind the leader, respectively, effectively eliminating them from the championship fight.
The next MotoGP round will take place next weekend, October 4-6, at the Motegi circuit in Japan.
